Voter ID push regains steam in Senate
A controversial resolution that, if passed in both chambers, would eventually create a new bill that including the ID provision was approved this morning with 36 senators in favor and 13 against.
The legislation would also change the suffrage laws to allow convicted felons to vote two years after they have served any sentenced or probationary time, except for those convicted of rape or murder.
But in order for the bill to be drafted, the House will first have to sign off with a two-thirds majority. Sen. Hob Bryan, D-Amory, held the resolution on a motion to reconsider, so it could be up for more debate before it is sent across the hall.
Senate Elections Chairman Terry Burton, R-Newton, called the plan a “true
compromise” between House leadership and Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann.
