While Attorney General Jim Hood was in Hinds County Circuit Court on Monday for the guilty plea of George Bell III in the death of his girlfriend, Hood’s staff was busy helping draft legislation to strengthen domestic violence laws.
Bell pleaded guilty to raping and killing Mary Heather Spencer and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. At the request of the victim’s family, Hood was prosecuting the case.
Supporters of new legislation hope the proposed law changes Hood’s staff was working on Monday will pass and make it easier for women in Spencer’s situation to get help.
