Education: Onus is now on Barbour, Senate

By: Magnolia Tribune - February 4, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 2/4/8

The Mississippi House has approved most of the provisions in The Quality Education Act of 2008. It is now up to the Senate to approve the act, and perhaps expand on it.

For those who say Mississippi can’t afford improvement and should just stick to basic funding, Nancy Loome, executive director of the public education advocacy group the Parents’ Campaign, has the right response.

“Holding back real education improvement efforts until the money is readily available will ensure that Mississippi remains at or near the bottom forever,” Loome says. “Economic prosperity will never, ever precede quality public education.”
