Education: Bryant should make it priority 1

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 13, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 11/13/7

Lt. Gov.-elect Phil Bryant has a big promise to fill: putting education funding at the top of the list when the 2008 Legislature convenes.

Bryant has already shown his first flash of independence as the one with the constitutional power to preside over the Senate by saying he would support reducing the 2008 Legislature’s 120-day session to 90 days.

But he has gone farther by pledging to support fully funding the Mississippi Adequate Education Program. The basic state funding formula for public education has only fitfully been fully funded.
