Speaker’s race in full gear behind scenes

While candidates for statewide office continue to campaign for the Nov. 6 election, a race just as important continues quietly but intently behind the scenes.

The job at stake is speaker of the House.

In recent weeks, both current Speaker Billy McCoy, D-Rienzi, and his only announced challenger, Rep. Jeff Smith, D-Columbus, have put out public statements all but claiming victory.
