Grocery tax cut, cigarette tax hike issues aren’t going away

While there are three months of campaigning still to go for control of the Mississippi Legislature for the next four years – hence control of Gov. Haley Barbour’s policy agenda as well – one thing was made clear during the Aug. 7 primary elections.

The longstanding efforts to cut Mississippi’s highest-in-the-nation 7 percent state sales tax on groceries and to raise Mississippi’s third-lowest-in-the-nation 18 cents per pack tax on cigarettes are issues that aren’t going away.
