Its sturdy mix of young and old families, upscale shops and tree-lined streets make it one of Jackson’s most desirable areas. A sizable amount of the city’s tax base comes from the concentrated Ward 1 area, where geography does matter and is emphasized.
Residents don’t just say they’re from Jackson; they say they’re from northeast Jackson, a distinction that paints an image of stability and money.
That stability was rocked a bit recently when Ben Allen, City Council president, told constituents that health reasons were forcing him to leave his seat. On Tuesday, voters will decide between four men in a special election.
