The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal Editorial, 8/2/7
Since early in the summer, the Daily Journal editorial board has met and interviewed most of the candidates in the truly competitive party primary races for statewide office. From those interviews, and from prior observation and experience with many of the candidates, we offer a series of recommendations to our readers for consideration in next Tuesday’s voting.
In most years the top of the ticket in both parties is the big draw. This year, Republicans and Democrats both seem certain to firmly settle on the highest-profile candidates in both parties, incumbent Gov. Haley Barbour for the GOP and trial lawyer John Arthur Eaves, Jr., for the Democrats. The governorship will be decided between those two in November, so our campaign conversations with them will come later.
Some of the lower-office races are more hotly contested in the primaries.
