The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal Editorial, 4/24/7
Your humble scribe boldly predicted that Melton had the chance to become Mississippi’s first African-American statewide elected official since the 19th century. Melton, I reasoned, came across as a no-nonsense, tough-talking businessman – much like former Gov. Kirk Fordice – and could garner enough white votes to win a statewide office in Mississippi.
While he may beat the charge and while he may remain a popular, sympathetic figure, he no longer can be viewed as a viable statewide candidate.
