Ridgeland police radio system upgraded

The Ridgeland Police Department will begin using a $1 million radio system next month that will allow them to communicate with surrounding law enforcement agencies.

Officials had been using a 25-year-old Motorola analog radio system equipped with only one channel that didn’t allow communication between people within the department or with outside agencies, Lt. Dwight Morrison said.

“It’s like going from the stone age to new technology,” Morrison said.
The new digital Astro XTS 2500 will allow Ridgeland officers to talk to the Madison Police Department and every agency in Hinds County, except Jackson.

The Madison County Board of Aldermen approved the system earlier this year using money from citations and arrests, Chief Jimmy Houston said. The system, leased from Motorola, will take three to five years to pay off, Houston said.
