Bertha Mack lives a block from where Jackson Police officer Thomas Catchings was shot and killed last month while trying to stop a carjacker.
Cars zip down Sanford Street in the west Jackson neighborhood at highway speeds, trash lines the curbs and the houses that aren’t boarded up and abandoned wear burglar bars. A bare metal pole stands lonely at each end of the street, missing green nameplate signs.
“You’re scared to walk in your house because you don’t know who’s going to be in there,” said Mack, who resides in Ward 4. “It makes me sick. I wish I was to a point where I could move.”
