Republican Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves said Monday that he’s proposing the state spend $100 million to try to improve job skills. Reeves said the single largest expense would be $75 million to community colleges for workforce training.
“I believe in Mississippi; we need to work to promote a culture of work and to enable Mississippi’s workforce to compete with anyone anywhere in the country and, in fact, anyone anywhere in the world,” Reeves said during a news conference in the Jackson suburb of Clinton, at a factory that makes generators.
Speaking later Monday to a Republican women’s group in Jackson, former Mississippi Supreme Court Chief Justice Bill Waller Jr. and state Rep. Robert Foster both said the state needs to ensure some students are prepared to work after high school graduation.
A Democrat running for governor, Attorney General Jim Hood, also has said people can earn good money with vocational skills.

WLBT – Mississippi primary election laws: What you need to know
You have lots of choices for the statewide primaries. Your first choice is which party primary you’ll vote in. But beware, you can’t switch parties between the primary and runoff.
“Once you pick one stream to vote in, Democrat or Republican, then you’ve got to vote in that stream throughout the rest of the primary runoff process,” said Mississippi College Law professor Matt Steffey.
State law actually references that you shouldn’t vote in a party primary unless you intend to vote for that party’s nominee in the general election. But, Steffey makes this note.
“I think it’s unenforceable at the polls and again causes more problems than it solves as a matter of law,” said Steffey.

WXXV – Auditors arrest Harrison County Assistant Tax Collector
Today State Auditor Shad White announced Special Agents from his office have arrested Harrison County Assistant Tax Collector Denise Gill after she was indicted on four counts of submitting false statements to defraud the government by a grand jury assembled by District Attorney for the Mississippi 2nd District Joel Smith. A demand letter worth $19,821.50 was delivered to Gill at the time of her arrest. Interest and investigative costs were included in the total demand amount.
Gill is accused of submitting fraudulent requests for mileage reimbursement for travel in her personal vehicle. Investigators determined neither Gill nor any other employee of the tax collector’s office actually incurred any of the fraudulently reported travel expenses.
