Bomb threat at Mississippi Capitol for second day

UPDATE: The Capitol building has been deemed clear after being evacuated due to a bomb threat for the second day in a row.

Update at 10:30 a.m. January 4:

According to a representative for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety the State Capitol building has been cleared after today’s bomb threat. The building will now reopen for business and the Senate is expected to gavel in at 11:00 a.m.

Prior to the announcement, DPS released a notice that they have received numerous bomb threats across the state and are taking precautions at all locations.

According to officials, the Mississippi Capitol is currently closed and has been evacuated due to a bomb threat. This is the second consecutive day law enforcement has been called to sweep the Capitol grounds.

Law enforcement is investigating a threat made this morning that was received by the Mississippi Supreme Court, across the street from the Capitol, according to the Department of Public Safety.

More information will be provided when available.

Officials investigate bomb threat made for the Mississippi State Capitol and Mississippi Supreme Court on January 4, 2024. This is the second threat in two days sicne the opening of the Legislative session.

The bomb threat emailed to the Secretary of State’s office on Wednesday prompted the closure of the Capitol while law enforcement swept the grounds. The all clear was given around 11 a.m. with officials calling it a “hoax.”

Multiple state Capitols around the country received similar threats on Wednesday as well, all of which were found not to be credible.
