MEC Capital Day 2023 checking pulse of state business, education leaders

By: Frank Corder - January 2, 2023

The annual event with lawmakers will take place this Thursday.

The 2023 Mississippi Economic Council’s Capital Day will be held Thursday, January 5th.

MEC’s annual event provides business and community leaders an opportunity to meet with state leaders and legislators to discuss the legislative session as they begin their work in the new session.

The 2023 MEC Legislative briefing will return to the State Capitol for the first time since 2020, allowing attendees to meet with their legislators while on the statehouse grounds.

“We’re excited to be returning to the Capitol for the first time since COVID for our legislative briefings,” Scott Waller, President and CEO of MEC, told Magnolia Tribune.

MEC Capital Day kicks off with the morning session at the Mississippi Trade Mart at 9am and includes a look at MEC’s priorities during the 2023 session.

The featured discussion at the morning session will focus on “Connecting the Dots” and checking the pulse of college, business, and workforce development leaders on ways to collaborate for improving education outcomes and increasing college and career readiness.

Attendees will then travel to the State Capitol to hear from legislative leadership such as Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann and Speaker Philip Gunn and engage with their lawmakers.

The State Officials’ Reception will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. back at the Trade Mart and will feature remarks from Mississippi leaders.

“We look forward to kicking off Capital Day with a conversation with Governor Tate Reeves, and the morning session features a look at how business and education can collaborate to create a strong workforce. After the briefings at the Capitol, we’ll wrap up with the State Officials’ Reception back at the Mississippi Trade Mart,” said Waller. “We welcome anyone interested in learning about the priorities for the 2023 legislative session to attend.”
