YP – Gov. Reeves increases safety measures for spectators at K-12 sporting events

Reeves announced he will be extending the statewide mask mandate for an additional two weeks. He also expanded the amount of attendance at K-12 sporting events from two people per player to 25% capacity.

YP – Secretary of State announces Public Hearings for Medical Marijuana Initiative
The Secretary of State’s Office will host a series of public hearings regarding Initiative Measure No. 65 (medical marijuana) in each of the old five Congressional districts, as required by State law. Initiative Measure No. 65 and the legislative alternative, Alternative Measure No. 65A, will be on the 2020 General Election ballot.
The public hearings allow voters to express their opinions and learn more about how to properly cast their ballot prior to Election Day. Voters will have the opportunity to hear from speakers both for and against Initiative Measure No. 65 and Alternative Measure No. 65A. The doors will open at 5 p.m., and all hearings will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m.

YP – Wicker, Hyde-Smith Praise Award of $3 Million for Improvements to Mississippi Airports
U.S. Senators Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., today marked the award of $3,001,470 in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants to make improvements at five Mississippi airports.
“Each year, grants from the Federal Aviation Administration help Mississippi airports make important improvements to their facilities,” Wicker said. “This latest round of grant funding will help airports in our state improve drainage and erosion control and install much-needed weather reporting equipment.”
WDAM – Palazzo urges Mississippians to complete 2020 census
United States Census Bureau workers have been knocking on doors recently. That’s because the deadline to complete the questionnaire is now Sept. 30. Counting was originally set to wrap up at the end of October.
According to the U.S. Census website, the move is meant to accelerate field data collection.
Rep. Steven Palazzo, who represents Mississippi’s 4th Congressional District, explains how the questionnaire impacts Mississippians.
“This determines public assistance. This determines infrastructure. This determines a lot of things based on the population and the ratios and the calculations,” said Palazzo. “You need to be registered, because that means a lot to the future of Mississippi,” said Palazzo.

WLOX – Coast group looks for approval to add Jesus statue near Deer Island
The Deep Water Mafia wants to get approval to put a large concrete Jesus statue on the rock jetties at the island’s west tip. The work of art stands eight and a half feet tall, and weighs about 3200 pounds.
Glenn Camplejohn spent the last nine months building it, which he named “Christ Our Protector.”
“I never made anything out of concrete in my life and I came up with this statue,” said Camplejohn. “That’s Christ right there. He’s got purpose for this statue.”
He said the purpose is for the statue to stand tall on the rock jetties on the west tip of Deer Island.
WTVA – Debate churns over rebel statue after board votes to keep it
Documents obtained through a public-records request show that business people, college athletes and other politicians asked supervisors in a Mississippi county to move a Confederate monument.
The Lafayette County supervisors then voted to keep the rebel statue where it has been since 1907, outside an old courthouse on the Oxford town square.
Through the records request, the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal received hundreds of email and text messages sent to supervisors.
