YP – Governor Reeves: 2 week statewide mask mandate, school starts delayed in hot spot areas for grades 7-12
Those areas are: Boliver, Coahoma, Forrest, George, Hinds, Panola, Sunflower, and Washington.
“This is what I believe is the best plan for the additional reopening of our schools,” said Reeves. “We will continually measure and assess the situation. We have to balance the very real risk of the virus into life long damage of school closures.”
He also issued a two week long statewide mask mandate. Furthermore, students six and older along with teachers will be required to wear masks will in school.
The order to delay school until August 17 will not impact non-public schools in these areas.
YP – State Health Officer issues order for the isolation of individuals positive for COVID-19
State Health Officer Thomas Dobbs MD, MPH, issued a statewide order for the Isolation of Individuals Diagnosed with COVID-19 effective immediately.
The Order – issued to everyone living in Mississippi – stipulates that anyone diagnosed with COVID-19 must immediately isolate at home.
Dobbs explains, “We have a lot of COVID activity throughout the state right now, so it is absolutely critical that anyone infected with COVID-19, and not hospitalized, must remain in the home or other appropriate residential location for 14 days from onset of illness (or from the date of a positive test for those who are asymptomatic).”

YP – Mayor Lumumba orders bars closed in Jackson for a week
Lumumba has ordered all bars, nightclubs, lounges, taverns, pubs, breweries, distilleries, and wineries unless they can provide drive-thru, curbside, or delivery services.
The order is for a week at this time. It goes into effect Tuesday, August 4, 2020, and will remain in effect through Tuesday, August 11, 2020.
Lumumba justifies his order by saying COVID–19 can easily spread when people are congregating for long periods of time in tight spaces, like inside a bar.

Delegates to the Mississippi Republican State Convention, held August 1, elected Party leadership for the next four years. County conventions and precinct caucuses were held July 11, 2020.

WLOX – New Lieutenant Colonel announced as deputy director of Mississippi Highway Patrol
Mississippi Highway Patrol Director Colonel Randy Ginn announced Major Malachi Sanders as Lieutenant Colonel of the Mississippi Highway Patrol today.
Sanders has been the Director of MHP’s Special Operations Division since July 2016 and is a graduate of MHP Cadet Class 48.
Throughout his years of service, his duties include Public Affairs Officer, Assistant Troop Commander, Troop Executive Officer, Troop Commander, and Special Operations Major.
CLARION LEDGER – Michigan man, accused of threatening former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, indicted
Harold Joseph Collins, 49, of Detroit, has been indicted by a Hinds County grand jury for cyberstalking for allegedly making telephone threats against then-Gov. Phil Bryant.in 2019.
Collins was indicted last month by a Hinds County grand jury on one count of cyberstalking. He faces a maximum two years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
The indictment says between Jan. 16-19, 2019, Collins, using electronic communications, threatened, terrified and/or harassed Bryant.
