Congressman Steven Palazzo (MS-4) today voted against a bill that would grant the District of Columbia (DC) statehood. If passed and signed into law, the legislation would authorize DC to have a Representative and two Senators. Palazzo released the following statement explaining his opposition.
“The nation’s capital was never intended to be a state. The Constitution clearly states that the federal district exclusively falls under the jurisdiction of the United States Congress. The vote also begs the question, if this issue was so important to Speaker Pelosi, why did she not move forward with legislation during her first speakership when Democrats had the Senate and the White House? This is an obvious power grab attempt by the Democrats who are desperate for more support heading into the November election.”
