In what is anticipated to be the last week of Legislative Session, rumors surrounding a possible solution to changing the state flag debate began to surface. According to Senators Chris McDaniel and Senator Melanie Sojourner, some members were considering offering measure for a second official state flag. This would give Mississippians the option of flying one or the other.
Monday, Governor Tate Reeves gave his final opinion on what he is calling the “Separate but Equal” option, and effectively shut down the possible solution.

The Mississippi Baptist Convention Board will announce its position on the Mississippi State flag.
The board will hold a news conference at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, at the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board Building in Jackson.

WLBT – Tunica County officials vote to stop flying Mississippi state flag
The Tunica County Board of Commissioners voted Monday to stop flying the Mississippi state flag because it uses the Confederate battle emblem.
The board unanimously passed a resolution to remove the flag from all county buildings and properties. One board member noted it’s the only state flag in the country still using the Confederate symbol.
GREENWOOD COMMONWEALTH – Board votes to remove Confederate monument
The Leflore County Board of Supervisors voted Monday night to remove the Confederate monument outside of the county’s courthouse.
The vote to remove the statue was 4-0.

YP – Cities and counties could receive COVID-19 emergency relief funds
Senator Angela Hill (R) has filled a bill that will ensure cities and counties are covered when it comes to incurred expenditures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill is entitled the Mississippi County and Municipality Emergency Relief Program.
SB 3047 gives the Mississippi Development Authority the authority to ensure these reimbursements are distributed based on applications submitted. The intention of the bill is to explain the vehicle for how these cities and counties will receive funds.
“We are looking at what their [city and county] requests are, and we are trying to provide what we are able to,” said Hill.

YP – Wicker Urges Senate to Support Mississippi Judge
U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., today spoke from the Senate floor in advance of a successful vote to close debate on the nomination of Judge Cory T. Wilson, who is President Trump’s choice to be a U.S. Circuit Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. The Senate is expected to hold a final vote later this week on Wilson’s confirmation.

WJTV – Mississippi public safety commissioner is confirmed to job
The Mississippi Senate has confirmed a former judge as the state’s new public safety commissioner.
Republican Gov. Tate Reeves nominated Sean Tindell of Gulfport to be commissioner last month. Tindell has been serving since June 1, and senators confirmed him to the job Thursday.
The commissioner is the head of the Department of Public Safety, which includes the Highway Patrol, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.
