Republicans currently hold a 53-47 seat advantage in the U.S. Senate. At a minimum, Democrats would need to flip at least three seats and hope to win the White House to give them the tiebreaker in the form of the Vice President if they are to regain the majority.
Mississippi does not look to be on the Democrats’ list of winnable seats.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is the only organization solely dedicated to electing a Democratic U.S. Senate. So the omission of Mississippi as one of their targets to defeat in November says a lot about how they view the race.
In an email update sent Friday, the DSCC said, “Democrats only need FOUR seats to flip the Senate, and here are ELEVEN vulnerable Republicans we can defeat,” naming the likes of Cory Gardner in Colorado, Kelly Loeffler in Georgia and Martha McSally in Arizona among the group.
But Cindy Hyde-Smith in Mississippi was not among the lot.
This should not be surprising for onlookers as Hyde-Smith defeated Espy in 2018 54%-46%. Further, according to the latest IMG poll conducted for Y’all Politics, the junior Republican Senator is leading the Democrat 58%-31%, if the election were held today, and has a favorability rating of nearly 15 points higher than her opponent with a solid 61% job approval rating.
