WAPT – “I will not pardon anyone,” Bryant says

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant has not issued any pardons during nearly eight years in office and said Wednesday that isn’t going to change now that he’s ending his term.

“I’m not considering any pardons. I don’t intend to have one pardon before I leave (as) governor, or after. I will not pardon anyone,” Bryant said. “I do have that power. I do not think it should be used. I’ve said this before, I don’t think any executive should have the power to wash away a crime just because you get elected as governor.”

HomeToday, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced the appointment of seven leaders from around the country to four-year terms as members of the National Assessment Governing Board.

This year’s slate includes six new members and one re-appointed member. The appointees’ terms officially began on Oct. 1, 2019, and will end on Sept. 30, 2023.

More than half of Mississippi’s schoolchildren didn’t score ‘kindergarten-ready’

The Mississippi Department of Education has released the Fall 2019 Kindergarten-Readiness Assessment results.

It showed that only 36.6% of students scoring ‘kindergarten-ready’ this year, which is similar to the percentage from the last four years.

“I taught pre-K, kindergarten and then I’m back in pre-K,” said Johanna Lebern, who teaches pre-K in Pearl. “And one of the things I noticed when I was in kindergarten was that we had a lot of kids coming to us that were not ready.”
