Democratic nominee for Attorney General Jennifer Riley Collins raises questions about support within her own party ahead of the November general election.

WDAM – Lieutenant governor candidate Jay Hughes makes campaign stop in Hattiesburg
Candidates for statewide offices continue to campaign across the state as we get closer to Mississippi’s general election in November. On Monday, Jay Hughes, the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, was touring the Pine Belt.
His first stop was at the Children’s Center for Communication and Development at The University of Southern Mississippi. Hughes toured the facility on the USM campus and shared his plans for education and healthcare with supporters.
“It all starts with education. It’s something I’ve been saying for years, and that means educating ourselves about what we are voting for, because this is going to be an election that makes a difference on education, healthcare, roads and bridges, mental illness and addiction,” said Hughes.

Councilman De’Keither Stamps, a Democrat and Republican Brent Bailey are facing off in November.
Bailey ran in 2015 but lost, he says there are conservative solutions to issues facing the office of PSC like new ways to find energy
“There’s certainly a price point out there that’s going to be more attractive not just to residential homeowners but, to small business and even large industries who have whether it’s an internal sustainability goals they want to meet or you know reducing their carbon footprint,” said Bailey.

WDAM – Mississippi’s unemployment rate improving
Over the past five years, Mississippi’s unemployment rate has dropped by 3%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
According to Hattiesburg Area Development Partnership President Chad Newell, overall job growth has gone up 3.8% in the last year.
In overall growth, Hattiesburg is number one in Mississippi and top 20 in the nation, according to Newell.

WAPT – Canton school board member sentenced to 15 years for witness intimidation
A member of the Canton School Board has been sentenced to prison for witness intimidation.
A Madison County judge sentenced Courtney Rainey to 15 years in prison. The judge suspended three years of the sentence, so Rainey will serve 12 years in prison, court officials said.
Rainey is one of several people who were charged with trying to influence the 2017 Canton municipal election. Prosecutors said Rainey is accused of bribing voters with Walmart gift cards and cash. She is also accused of improperly helping people fill out absentee ballots.

WDAM – Wicker, Hyde-Smith, Thompson and Guest announce $3.75 million for 12 Mississippi school districts
U.S. Senators Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., and Congressmen Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., and Michael Guest, R-Miss., announced a $3.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support the Mississippi Public School Consortium for Educational Access.
The Consortium, comprised of 12 school districts in rural, high-poverty communities, provides high school students with access to advanced science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses.
“This funding will give more Mississippi students access to the advanced coursework they need to achieve their full potential,” Wicker said. “All students deserve the same educational opportunities regardless of where they live.”…
…Now in its third year of operation, the Consortium has served high-achieving students in 12 school districts: Aberdeen, Booneville, Coahoma AHS, Holmes County, Houston, Humphreys County, Lauderdale County, North Bolivar, Philadelphia, Pontotoc County, Scott County, and Quitman County. The University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, Jackson State University, and Millsaps College are among the universities involved in the project.

WTOK – Judge issues bench order for local candidate
A candidate for district attorney of the 10th Circuit Court District, Michael Grace, was arrested Monday for allegedly being in contempt of court.
Chancery Judge Larry Primeaux issued the order, requiring the sheriff to take Grace into custody and sentencing him to 24 hours in the Clarke County Jail and fining him $500.
According to the court document, Grace was ordered previously to be in court Monday to represent a client in a case and was late, sending his secretary in his place. Primeaux’ order called this “unacceptable”.

WTVA – First lady meets with children at pediatric center
Monday was far from routine for the kids at the Pediatric Center of McComb, where the story time included a reading by Mississippi First Lady Deborah Bryant.
Bryant beamed as she crawled around on the floor with the children, tugging on their toes and telling them which little piggy did what, and getting hugs from a good many of them.
She handed out sunglasses as she read the children’s book “Pete the Cat and the Magic Sunglasses.”
