A new analysis from Fitch Ratings has good and bad news for Mississippi.
Fitch, one of three major credit rating firms, maintained that the state has a “stable” credit outlook and affirmed an AA rating on about $4.5 billion worth of debt.
Mississippi has had an AA rating from Fitch since 2016, when Fitch downgraded Mississippi from AA+. That same year, Moody’s gave a “negative” credit outlook.
According to Fitch’s 2019 report, Mississippi has “strong control over spending and revenues and generally conservative financial practices, providing significant financial resilience.”

In a statement to Politico, Cruz said he believes the seat should be filled by “someone with a strong, demonstrated record as a constitutionalist,” and that Ozerden’s judicial record doesn’t meet that standard.
“I have significant concerns that Judge Ozerden’s judicial record does not indicate that he meets that standard. For that reason, I do not believe he should be on the court of appeals, and I will oppose his nomination,” Cruz said in the statement to Politico.
Ozerden’s nomination was announced in June. His confirmation hearing began in July, but a committee vote has not yet been held. In introducing Judge Ozerden to their colleagues, Mississippi’s U.S. senators delivered high praise of the Gulfport native.
“Judge Ozerden has impeccable credentials, and it is clear he is very well qualified—by ability, education, and experience—to serve as an appellate judge,” Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith said.

U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith introduced establishing the week of Sept. 22-29, 2019 as “Gold Star Families Remembrance Week” Wednesday.
The week is aimed at honoring the families of fallen service members.
“Entire families share the grief and loss of a loved one, who has died while serving to defend us,” Hyde-Smith said. “This resolution recognizes that fact and asks the American people to honor the families affected by the loss of a loved one in service to our country.”
Hyde-Smith hopes to encourage people to perform acts of service and good-will to honor the fallen veterans and their families.
