WTOK – Mississippi: Election lawsuit is not about voting rights
Attorneys defending Mississippi say a lawsuit challenging the state’s system of choosing a governor is about “partisan politics,” not protecting African Americans’ voting rights.
The election-year lawsuit was filed May 30 by four black plaintiffs with backing from Eric Holder, who was the first African American U.S. attorney general.
It says Mississippi’s 1890 constitution “has its basis in racism”, requiring gubernatorial candidates to win a majority of the popular vote and a majority of the 122 Mississippi House districts. Without both, the election is decided by the House. The system is unique in the U.S.
In court papers Monday, Mississippi’s Republican House speaker and secretary of state said they shouldn’t be sued but Democratic Attorney General Jim Hood should be.
WDAM – State representative candidate kills wife, himself inside Marshall Co. medical clinic
Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson said a man went into the Williams Medical Clinic in Potts Camp and shot his wife, who worked there as a receptionist.
WMC has confirmed the identity of the couple through the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Dickerson said Carl Robinson, who was running for state representative of District 5, shot his wife Latoya Thompson before killing himself. Thompson was flown to the hospital where she later died.
Investigators say the two were in the middle of a divorce.

WJTV – Hinds County candidate says a county “supervisor’s a man’s job”
WLOX – Mississippi high school teachers being surveyed about U.S. History test
Mississippi high school teachers are being asked to complete a survey on whether they think the state should continue requiring the U.S. History test.
“That is the only assessment we give that is not required by the federal government,” explained Mississippi Professional Educators Executive Director.
It became the last action item for the state’s testing task force to undertake. The group met throughout the school year to see if there are ways to reduce or streamline the amount of testing statewide.
