Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) doubles down and stands by Rep. Ilhan Omar’s 9/11 comments

By: Sarah Ulmer - April 15, 2019

Over the weekend Congressman Bennie Thompson tweeted the words #IStandWithIlhan. The hashtag has been seen on social media ever since House Representative Ilhan Omar from Minnesota was sworn into Congress this year.

The hashtag came in response to a tweet by President Trump containing an edited video of Ilhan Omar speaking at the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) in March. In his tweet the President also wrote “We will never forget.”

In the video Omar says “CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something…”

According the NPR the full quote was: “CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.” But the video only focuses on the “some people did something.” Omar was commenting on how terrorism creates Islamaphobia.

Representatives on both sides of the issue are speaking out. You can watch more on their thoughts as reported by Fox News below:

Thompson also appeared on ABC News This Week program and further defended Rep. Omar.
