Mike Espy outlines stance on major issues at Jackson leadership session

Partners of Working Together Jackson met at New Horizon Church International on Wednesday in Jackson for the Leaders Luncheon and Accountability Session. In attendance was Senate candidate Mike Espy.

Time was allowed during the session for selected individuals to ask Espy previously prepared questions surrounding his stance on topics like education, healthcare, and immigration.

After he finished with the Q and A, he stepped aside to speak with the media. As expected, one of the first questions he was asked pertained to his thoughts on his opponents comments about “public hangings.”

“Nobody is perfect, everybody makes mistakes when you make a mistake you own up to it and you say I’m sorry, that is a sign of strength,”said Espy. “I think it was curious…that comment was disappointing, it was hurtful and harmful.”

While some officials are asking for Hyde-Smith to resign, Espy said he isn’t seeking that. However, he is hoping to vote her out and vote him in on the 27th.

Aside from those comments he questioned his opponents stance on health insurance for pre-existing conditions. Espy said he has reviewed Hyde-Smith’s record on the matter and that it shows she does not support them, while Hyde-Smith said she has voted for them.

On the same day as this event, the Hyde-Smith camp put out a press release on how she has co-sponsored a bill with another Senator to cover those with pre-existing conditions. However Espy call’s the bill bogus, claiming it doesn’t cover the condition, just the individual.

When it comes to voter turnout for the runoff on the 27th Espy chose not to speculate as to whether or not the controversy of Hyde-Smith’s comments would bring more of his supporters to the polls or not.

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith was also invited to the event but was unable to attend because she is in Session in D.C.
