Congressman Thompson speaks out on Hyde-Smith hanging comments

By: Courtney Ingle - November 12, 2018

Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, the sole African-American and Democrat of the Mississippi Congressional Delegation, released the following statement regarding Mississippi U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith’s comments on attending a public hanging:

“Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith’s comments are beyond disrespectful and offensive to the over 30% of African-Americans residing in Mississippi,” Thompson said. “Mississippi has one of the highest numbers of public lynching, that we know of, than any other state in this country. It’s plain and simple, Hyde-Smith should apologize to all Mississippian’s especially African-Americans who have been the recipients of terrorist lynching. Real statesmanship dictates that she does.”
