SUNHERALD – Senate hopefuls split on who is fighting for folks with pre-existing conditions
Because both Republican Sens. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Roger Wicker, who will be on the ballot Tuesday, have been ardent supporters of Trump and opponents of the Affordable Care Act, their Democratic opponents have accused them of being a threat to the pre-existing medical conditions coverage mandate.
State Rep. David Baria, D-Bay St. Louis, who is challenging Wicker said, “Invalidating the pre-existing coverage requirement of the ACA is more than just a political stunt. It’s a matter of life and death to many right here in Mississippi and it should be treated as a serious policy issue. …. If the 20 states that filed this lawsuit prevail, over 50 million Americans with pre-existing conditions could lose coverage or be required to pay enormous amounts in premiums. Simply put, if this lawsuit prevails it would cause an almost immediate and systemic health crisis.”
But Wicker said the goal of the lawsuits is not to gut the pre-existing coverage mandate, but to ensure better health care for Mississippians.

CLARION LEDGER – Hyde-Smith campaign says mailer without disclosure ‘last second dirty trick’
U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith’s campaign is crying foul over an anonymous flyer mailed to Mississippians in recent days that accuses her of voting for Hillary Clinton in 2008.
A political action committee supporting her Democratic opponent, Mike Espy, in the tight U.S. Senate special election last week paid more than $300,000 to a California firm for political door hangers and direct mail, campaign finance records show.
Now, Mississippians are receiving mailers from San Francisco-based Terris Barnes Walters, identified with the postal code TBW. Citing a Breitbart article, the flyers allege Hyde-Smith — who is endorsed by President Donald Trump — voted for Clinton in 2008. Hyde-Smith, a former Democrat, has vehemently denied she voted for Clinton.
The problem? The mailers don’t disclose who paid for them, as required by the Federal Election Commission. They make no mention of PowerPACPlus, the group supporting Espy that paid for the door hangers and fliers, or any other campaign or political committee.
WJTV – Espy cancels Jackson fish fry, still much to do Sunday in final hours
Due to rainy weather, US Senate hopeful Mike Espy and his campaign team are canceling their Sunday afternoon fish fry planned in Vicksburg, but Espy still has much to attend throughout the evening, according to a press release.
Communications director for Espy, Danny Blanton, says he’ll be attending an event put on by the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus Sunday afternoon at Cade Chapel, at 1000 W. Ridgeway St. in Jackson.
DAILY JOURNAL – Espy touts ‘independent’ appeal at Tupelo stop
U.S. Senate candidate Mike Espy visited Tupelo Saturday, hosting a fish fry and campaign rally in Fairpark to energize voters ahead of Tuesday’s election.
The Democratic former congressman and Secretary of Agriculture said he is running as an “independent” choice for voters seeking a senate hopeful committed to working across the aisle.
“At 30 years old, my first bill was an economic development bill that Ronald Reagan signed into law, and I wrote the bill. I lobbied for it in the House of Representatives, it passed and I went to the Senate, and got Thad Cochran to co-sponsor the bill,” Espy told The Daily Journal.

DESOTO TIMES – Record number of absentee ballots cast
A record number of absentee ballots have been cast in next Tuesday’s general election and special election.
By Saturday at noon, DeSoto County Circuit Clerk officials estimate more than 2,800 individuals will have cast absentee ballots in advance of Tuesday’s general election and special election. That number had reached more than 2,700 by late Friday afternoon.
In fact the number has quadrupled the number of absentee votes cast in the last mid-term election four years ago, according to Dale Thompson, DeSoto Circuit Clerk.
