WTOK – Espy endorsed by Legislative Black Caucus

The Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus endorsed Mike Espy in a special election for U.S. Senate.

Members of the caucus announced their support for Espy’s campaign at a news conference Tuesday in Jackson.

“Mike has a long history of standing up and fighting for the rights of our community, and, once senator, we know he will continue to fight to ensure our voices are heard and respected,” said Rep. Sonya Williams Barnes, caucus chairperson. “Mike will provide a much-needed voice in the United States Senate. He has spent his entire career fighting for communities like ours and we know he will continue that fight as senator.”

Espy said he’s proud to have the support.

On Wednesday, October 10, State Rep. David Baria’s first statewide ad will begin airing on channels across the state. Baria is the first Democrat to get on television in the Mississippi Senate races. This ad is backed by a five-figure buy, and is paid for by his campaign committee. Here is the ad:

The Mississippi Association of Educators announced Tuesday its endorsement of the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, state Rep. David Baria.

“We are so thrilled to support Representative Baria and his campaign,” said MAE president, Joyce Helmick. “His passion for the people of Mississippi and his work to make our lives better is reflected in his record and his service in the Mississippi House. He’s long been a friend of public education and public educators and we are so grateful for his leadership.

A crowd of veteran Lafayette County organizers, college students preparing to vote for the first time and citizens new to political action gathered at the Stone Center in Oxford on Monday night for a town hall with Democratic U.S. Senate candidate David Baria.

The meeting was the sixth of 12 community conversations that the state house minority leader has planned for his campaign ahead of the Nov. 6 election against Republican incumbent Roger Wicker. After giving a 10-minute introduction about his background and motivation for running, Baria answered questions from potential constituents for nearly two hours.

WTOK – MMA endorses Michael Guest for Congress

The Mississippi Manufacturers Association Board of Directors voted unanimously to endorse Republican Michael Guest in his campaign to represent the state’s 3rd congressional district.

MMA made the announcement Tuesday at its board meeting at the Pearl River Resort in Philadelphia.

MMA president and CEO, Jay Moon, said the organization chose Guest
because he has been an advocate for Mississippi’s citizens and businesses, supporting lower taxes and fewer regulations.

WDAM – Mississippi imposes new tax on hybrid vehicles

Owners of hybrid and electric vehicles in Mississippi received a notice from the state Department of Revenue informing them of the new annual tax on their vehicles.

The new tax, which took effect on October 1, will tax $75 for hybrid vehicles and $150 for total electric vehicles annually.

The tax is in addition to regular tag fees and must be paid at vehicle registration or renewal.
