SUNHERALD – Coast lawmakers demand prosecution if there was a cover up in girl’s school bus assault
A delegation of state lawmakers are calling on the district attorney’s office to prosecute anyone who may have tried to cover up the assault and mistreatment of a St. Martin special education student.
State Rep. Charles Busby, a lawmaker on the state education committee, said he sent three letters out late this week, one to District Attorney Tony Lawrence, another to the Mississippi Department of Education and one to the Jackson County School Board to express their wishes.
Other state lawmakers also signed the letters: Reps. Hank Zuber, Jeffrey Guice, Manly Barton and John Read and Sens. Brice Wiggins and Michael Watson.
Busby said he and other lawmakers were appalled by the mistreatment of the St. Martin Middle School special education student when the Sun Herald broke the story that included video of the incidents.
WDAM – Former candidate for state rep pleads guilty to unlawful voting
A Forrest County attorney who ran for state office in 2017 pleaded guilty Monday to voting outside of his legal district.
Attorney General Jim Hood said Lowndes County Judge Lee Coleman sentenced 28-year-old Cory Ferraez to six months in jail with all six months suspended. He was also ordered to pay a $200 fine and $200 to the Crime Victims Compensation Fund.
Hood said Ferraez illegally voted in Lowndes County in 2015 even though he was living in Hattiesburg. Ferraez was arrested in December after a grand jury indicted him for swearing to a false application for absentee ballot and voting outside of his legal domicile.

VICKSBURG POST – Analysis: Candidates vie for attention in 3rd District race
Voters in central Mississippi’s 3rd District are choosing a new member of Congress for the first time in a decade. Candidates have been traveling for weeks to speak at forums and fish fries, and the heavy rotation of advertising – for those who can afford it – is expected to begin close to Memorial Day.
Party primaries are June 5, and if a runoff is needed to choose the Republican nominee, it will be June 26…
…Winners of the Republican and Democratic primaries will advance to the Nov. 6 general election, and the ballot then will also list Matthew Holland as a Reform Party candidate for the 3rd District.
