WTOK – Howard Sherman speaks on hopes for U.S. Senate race

“You can’t be number one in the arts like we are. You go to the new MAX museum and think, ‘Oh my God,’ and yet, 50th in everything else,” Sherman says. “There was a thing that hit the paper that 20 percent of the state doesn’t have access to good food. Given what I do for a living, I thought, I can make an impact on this state.”

Sherman, a venture capitalist, is running as a Democrat. But he says he wants to work across party lines to see effective change.

“When I walk into McDonald’s and I’m hungry, I have a problem, right? They solve it,” Sherman explains. “Nobody says, ‘What party are you before I give you a burger?’ When I’m in a business meeting, and we’re trying to endeavor to fix something or create something, only in politics are we like, ‘Wait. Are you a Republican or a Democrat?’ That’s really not what it’s about.”

DESOTO TIMES – Eubanks tapped as Emerging Leader

State Rep. Dan Eubanks, R-Walls, has been selected to GOPAC’s 2018 Class of Emerging Leaders.

The GOPAC designation is a list of promising legislators selected for their potential and ability to impact their state and the Republican Party.

“Our 2018 Emerging Leaders highlight our efforts to promote Republicans who advocate for the personal and economic security of Americans. These men and women are a superb addition to the roster of Republicans we are developing nationwide to lead in their state legislatures and/or run for higher office.” said GOPAC Chairman David Avella.

WTOK – Teacher Appreciation Week and teacher pay

Gov. Phil Bryant signed a teacher pay raise into law in 2014. But still, Mississippi’s pay is lower than all states except South Dakota.

The National Education Association lists the average salary at $42,744. The most recent report from the state superintendent raises that average by less than $2,000.

“You don’t want to say that word that begins with an ‘s’ and ends with an ‘e’ and has an ‘ike’ to it. You don’t want to say that but a lot of teachers across the nation have gone there,” said Stout.
