HB 283 authored by Rep. Miles would appropriate funds to the Department of Public Safety and the Division of the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol for a 60 member highway patrol trooper training class during FY 2019. This is important because according to MHP they are not meeting capacity for troopers on the roads, and have many more eligible for retirement in the next few years.
House Bill 283

The following sum, or so much of it as may be necessary, is appropriated out of any money in the State General Fund, not otherwise appropriated, to the Department of Public Safety, Division of Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, for the purpose of defraying the expenses of a sixty-member highway patrol trooper training class to be conducted at the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy, for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2018, and ending June 30, 2019….$7,706,102.00. The purpose of this appropriation is to replace the active patrol officers who have retired from service and prepare the Department of Public Safety for the potential reduction in the current patrol officer force due to retirement eligibility.
