WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Gregg Harper (R-Miss.) and the House of Representatives voted this afternoon to override President Obama’s veto on the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, or JASTA. This comes on the heels of the Senate’s vote to override earlier today, marking the first time that Congress has successfully overridden a veto during the Obama Administration.
The bill, S. 2040, allows victims and families of victims of terrorist attacks to bring legal claims against foreign states that aid and abet acts of terror that occur on U.S. soil. This would empower the families of those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to sue Saudi Arabia in U.S. court for their suspected role in supporting the hijackers who carried out the strikes.
“If I have the choice between siding with a foreign country and standing up for the American people, I will always put America first,” said Congressman Harper.
