Senator Cochran honored by Farm Bureau
JACKSON – Senator Thad Cochran (R–MS) has been presented with the Friend of Farm Bureau Award for his outstanding work in the 114th Congress. This is the eleventh consecutive time that Mississippi Farm Bureau has honored Senator Cochran for his strong commitment to the farmers of Mississippi.
“Senator Cochran has always been a friend to the Mississippi farmer and has championed farmers’ concerns in Washington,” said Mississippi Farm Bureau President Mike McCormick. “The senator and his staff understand the challenges that Mississippi farmers face, and their continued support of agriculture is certainly appreciated.”
“Agriculture is essential to Mississippi’s economy and way of life, and it is important that federal policies work to help, not hinder, all aspects of the agricultural sector,” Cochran said. “I appreciate this honor and the Mississippi Farm Bureau’s advocacy on behalf of farmers, ranchers and agribusiness.”
Cochran serves on the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee. He also serves on the Rules and Administration Committee and is Chairman of the powerful Appropriations Committee.
Senator Cochran was cited for his support on (S.1): Keystone Pipeline Approval; (Amendment 607 to S. Con. Res. 11): Create Reserve Fund to Eliminate Death Tax; (H.R. 2146): Trade Promotion Authority; (H.R. 22): Surface Transportation Reauthorization; (Cloture Vote on S. 1140): Rewrite EPA WOTUS Rule; (S.J. Res. 22: Resolution of Disapproval of EPA WOTUS Rule; (H.R. 2029): Omnibus Appropriations for FY2016; (S.2012): Bill to Modernize Federal Energy Policy; & (S.J. Res. 28): Resolution of Disapproval of USDA Catfish Inspection Program.
In 1972, Cochran was elected United States Congressman for the Fourth District which included twelve counties in southwest Mississippi. He served three terms in the U. S. House of Representative before being elected to the U. S. Senate in 1978, becoming the first Republican in more than 100 years to win a statewide election in Mississippi. He has since been re-elected six times and is currently serving his seventh term in office.
Mississippi Farm Bureau honored Senator Cochran in 1990 with their highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award.
The Friend of Farm Bureau Award is given at the end of each Congress to members of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate who were nominated by their respective state Farm Bureaus and approved by the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Board of Directors.
