BOBBY HARRISON: Plum of a chairmanship might be more of a lemon
This summer Gunn finds himself in the unusual position of having the opportunity to make a new, major appointment. Frierson has been appointed by Gov. Phil Bryant to serve as commissioner of revenue, starting July 1.
That means Gunn will get to make a new appointment to chair the key Appropriations Committee. This is a big deal and a huge chip the speaker has over his membership – perhaps…
…House Appropriations Vice Chairman Mac Huddleston, R-Pontotoc, might be the only Northeast Mississippi member who would be considered a serious candidate for the post, but perhaps Accountability, Efficiency and Transparency Chairman Jerry Turner, R-Baldlwyn, is “a dark horse” contender.
Other possible candidates could include Scott Bounds, R-Philadelphia, the current chair of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks; Charles Busby, R-Pascagoula; the chair of Transportation; Sam Mims, R-McComb, the Public Health chairman, and John Read, R-Gautier, the chairman of Conservation and Water Resouces.
