RELEASE from Mississippi Senate:
After reading in The Clarion-Ledger about former ABA basketball player Jaborri Thomas’ sponsoring a free basketball fundamentals camp for inner-city youth, Senator John Horhn in the inaugural edition of his radio show, “Tell John,” raised $5,000 to aid Thomas’ efforts. The inaugural show aired at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2016, on WMPR radio, a community-based radio station.
“Tell John,” which focuses on solving problems for citizens at the local, state, and federal level, raised $4,000 in cash contributions from businesses, including Integrated Management Services – (IMS), Neel Schaffer Engineering, Donelson Construction Inc., Dixon Interiors, and Barefield Workplace Solutions, and from businessmen Sutter Smith, Willie Bozeman and Worth Thomas. In-kind contributions of $1,000 were also pledged by Food Depot and McDade’s Markets.
“When I read about Jaborri’s almost single-handed efforts, I felt compelled to get involved to help make this summer camp for youth a success,” Senator Horhn said. “Jaborri is not only teaching basketball fundamentals, he’s teaching character, discipline and team work.”
Thomas received part of the money after the radio show and other contributions will be given to him between today and Friday, Horhn said.
The camp will take place during morning hours across the weekend through Wednesday of next week at Callaway High School.
