State Sen. CHAD McMAHAN: First session proved insightful, productive
People ask me regularly in coffee shops and restaurants across the district if the Senate was what I expected. Yes, in many ways it was. However, a few things stuck out. I was very surprised how friendly I was received in the Senate. All of the senators and the staff made me feel welcome. Both Democrats and Republicans welcomed me and offered their friendship and guidance. I think this is an appropriate place for me to specifically thank Sen. J.P. Wilemon, 5th District; Sen. Hob Bryan, 7th District; Sen. Russell Jolly, 8th District; Pro Tem Sen. Terry Burton, 31st District, and Sen. Michael Watson, 51st District, for their counsel and friendship.
It is easy to be negative when we are surrounded by negative press and when we are constantly bombarded with stories of how we are failing, arguing and we are the poorest state in the Union. However, I have found great strength and courage in some of the legislators. They care about the people of this state, and they are careful to preserve and protect our Constitution and institutions so they will be here for the next generation.
I was amazed by the spirit and attitude of the young people that served as pages in the Senate. They have a strong belief in God, country, family and in their state. They believe their futures are bright, and they want to contribute and be a part of our state. I enjoyed watching and working with them.
Legislatively, I think we got a great deal accomplished this session. Let me take a moment to highlight a couple of the major achievements. The Religious Liberties Act has been controversial, but let me take this opportunity to remind my fellow citizens that this continent and nation were founded in religious freedom. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution recognizes our right to practice our faith. We also passed some new gun laws strengthening the right of the people to keep and bear arms. The gun legislation reaffirms and promotes the individual’s right to carry and to conceal carry a weapon to protect themselves, their families and their property. I’m proud of that. Our liberty to own firearms makes us unique, and many people in the world do not celebrate that liberty.
