Tax cuts lead to budget cuts, layoffs
The Department of Health could lose millions in matching federal dollars if the state money is not there.
“It is almost a $4 million decrease and so that will require us to send some people home. There will be things we don’t do anymore, and there are things there will be less of,” said Dr. Mary Currier, state health officer.
The Department of Health already laid off 61 people and froze 89 vacant jobs. Currier predicted longer delays in conducting hospital, nursing home and even day care facility inspections.
“The reductions that the governor has made – two of them this fiscal year and a limited amount of money available for next year – all of those things come into play,” Republican Sen. Terry Burton said.
