Appointed superintendents bill finally heads to Governor’s desk

By: Magnolia Tribune - March 25, 2016

Legislature approves appointed school superintendents

After years of intense debate and failed efforts, the House on Thursday night sent a bill to Gov. Phil Bryant that will require all Mississippi school superintendents be appointed, rather than elected after January 1, 2019.

The House, amid partisan fighting and the Democratic minority filibustering over claims of heavy handidness and reneging on deals by Speaker Philip Gunn, passed the appointed superintendents bill 80-36 after only a few minutes of questions. SB 2438 now heads to Gov. Phil Bryant — who supports the measure — for him to sign it into law….

…A companion bill to require school boards be elected and not appointed has died this session.
