HARRISON: #GOP2016, like #MSSen 2014, has had once-in-lifetime moments

BOBBY HARRISON: GOP 2016 primary veered down into previously unspoken territory

In still unofficial returns, nearly 404,000 people voted in Tuesday’s Republican primary in Mississippi where Trump won comfortably but with less than a majority vote.

The previous record Republican primary turnout was the tumultuous 2014 U.S. Senate runoff between state Sen. Chris McDaniel of Ellisville, a Tea Party favorite, and long-time incumbent Thad Cochran of Oxford and of various other places in Mississippi throughout his lengthy and distinguished career.

While it could be argued that the Republican presidential race, though often nasty, had at least a certain amount of comedic value, the same might not be said about the 2014 U.S. Senate.

The Senate contest, like the presidential primary, had once-in-lifetime moments you thought you would never see in an election in the United States.
