SALTER looks at school consolidation efforts in #MSleg

By: Magnolia Tribune - February 22, 2016

Sid Salter: Consolidation legislation proves prophetic

School consolidation legislation now under consideration in the state Senate would consolidate or eliminate 10 of the state’s existing 144 existing state school districts….

…The common denominator is this legislation is that it targets districts or schools with small or declining enrollments and small or declining tax bases. More to the point, it’s consolidation that has a political genesis at the state rather than the local level.

The history of school consolidation efforts in Mississippi is one that suggests that school consolidation that emanates from the local level faces political obstacles that are tightly ingrained with local political survival. But when that consolidation effort begins at the state level, the effort generally picks up political steam.
