RELEASE:
From Congressman Trent Kelly:
ACTIONS IN THE HOUSE
Reconciliation
I was proud to support the first piece of legislation to reach the president’s desk that repeals Obamacare and defunds Planned Parenthood. Additionally, this legislation would reduce the federal deficit by $516 billion dollars. Each fiscal year, Congress can use the budget reconciliation process to pass legislation with a simple majority vote in the Senate. While repeal is necessary, I am encouraged that the House is committed to promoting a replacement bill that puts people in charge of their healthcare decisions, not the federal government.
As promised, the president has vetoed the legislation. That does not mean the House is finished with this issue. Later this month, the House is going to hold a vote to override that veto. As I learn more, I will keep you updated.
Second Amendment
President Obama’s plan to tighten gun control laws through executive action is troubling but not surprising. I will use my role as your Representative to fight any executive or congressional action that restricts the rights of legal gun owners. The Second Amendment is not up for debate, and I expect Congress and the courts to challenge the president’s executive actions.
Floor Speech Honoring Victims
The Mississippi delegation joined me in honoring the victims and those affected by the storms that devastated our region over the Christmas holiday. Please take a minute to watch the video below.
