SID SALTER: State revenue shortfall likely to impact 2016 decisions
In the wake of the pitched battle over Initiative 42, the expectation after the election was that lawmakers would be moved to address a more robust effort to fund the Mississippi Adequate Education Program.
But state revenue collections suggest that lawmakers may well face yet another revenue shortfall during the 2016 legislative session. That’s based primarily on lagging state sales tax collections that are down year-over-year and down some 3.18 percent below the state revenue estimate.
Overall state revenue collections trail the revenue estimate, but are $24.3 million over collections year-over-year. Unless the revenue picture improve, lawmakers could face some mid-year budget adjustments – meaning cuts.
