SALTER: Legislature should seriously tackle hard educational issues

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 12, 2015

Sid Salter: Mississippi voters sent strong messages

On the right, Republicans who cling to the old saw that we “need to stop throwing money at education” in Mississippi need to confront the reality that despite record education spending in recent years, Mississippi has never really “thrown money” at education at any level.

On the left, Democrats entrenched with the state’s teacher unions at some point have to accept that Republican calls for performance accountability and for alternatives like charter schools in chronic failing districts can no longer be summarily dismissed as bad or wrong.

And across the political spectrum in Mississippi, we have to begin to seriously look at really hard issues like school consolidation, elected school superintendents and getting pre-kindergarten, early childhood education out of the pilot stages and into statewide operation.
