Nash, Taggart: #Initiative42 outcome hard to predict

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 3, 2015

Political odd couple Nash, Taggart on Tuesday elections

Mississippi’s political odd couple, authors and politicos Democrat Jere Nash and Republican Andy Taggart, handicapped Tuesday’s elections on Monday at the Stennis Capitol Press Corps lunch in Jackson.

“My general sense is we are on the eve of the most boring cycle of my life,” Taggart said of Tuesday’s lack of heated statewide races, with most incumbents expected to breeze back into office. “… This may be our lowest voter turnout in the last 20 years, with the caveat being Initiative 42, what it does for turnout.”

Voters on Tuesday will decide the Initiative 42 school funding issue, a ballot initiative to change the state constitution to give the courts the power to force the Legislature to provide more funding for K-12 public education.

Nash said he believes the complex ballot on Initiative 42, with its competing Initiative 42A added by the GOP legislative leadership, “makes it impossible to predict” how the 42 vote will go. Taggart said he predicts “a tossup” vote on the competing initiatives, “which means (Initiative 42) will ultimately be defeated on election night.”
