Mississippi lawmaker wants American Red Cross oversight
WASHINGTON — Second District Rep. Bennie Thompson says the American Red Cross has not responded well to some disasters, including Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy and the earthquake in Haiti, so he has introduced legislation to require greater federal oversight of the organization.
Thompson, the top Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee, said federal oversight of the American Red Cross is “severely lacking.” He introduced the “American Red Cross Sunshine Act’’ in the House earlier this month and asked the General Accountability Office to examine the group.
“At the end of the day, we wanted to make sure that the Red Cross was performing its contracted responsibility to the highest possible level,’’ Thompson said
