RELEASE:

COCHRAN STATEMENT ON MEMORIAL DAY

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), chairman of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, today released the following statement marking Memorial Day and commemorating those who gave their lives in service to our country:

“Memorial Day reminds us of the cost of freedom and liberty. With an understanding of the ongoing threats to our national security today, citizens across Mississippi and around the country will join other Americans this Memorial Day to honor, remember and thank those who sacrificed their lives to serve and defend our nation. From the fields of Lexington and Concord to modern-day battlefields in the Middle East, America has been blessed with bright, brave men and women who risk their lives to protect ours.

“Mississippians have long honored and commemorated those who gave their lives to defend our country and its values. Columbus, Mississippi, held the first Memorial Day commemoration in 1866, when its citizens decorated the graves of both Confederate and Union soldiers. That tradition continues, nationwide, to this day. It reaffirms how preciously we have and must continue to guard our liberty.

“This Memorial Day we also remember the families of the men and women who have lost loved ones in the service of our country. They too often bear unseen scars, and they deserve our visible and tangible support. I encourage all Mississippians to take time to pay homage to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”
