Not surprisingly, teacher union endorses Democrat Walter Zinn in #MS01
Mississippi Educators Recommend Walter Zinn for Congress
The Mississippi Association of Educators recommends Walter Zinn for Congress in the upcoming runoff election on Tuesday, June 2, 2015.
“When it comes to public education, Walter Zinn values our students like we do, and his positions on policies as well as critical resources for our students reflect those shared values,” stated Joyce Helmick, President of the Mississippi Association of Educators (MAE). “We are particularly appreciative of Mr. Zinn’s support for educators to use multiple measures to evaluate student achievement and school performance. As professional educators, we oppose using one test to determine whether a student moves forward in a grade or is retained for an entire year. Assessing students meaningfully must incorporate multiple measures of learning, including measures that assess higher-order thinking skills which high-stakes standardized tests alone fail to determine.”
Ms. Helmick listed other reasons that the association is recommending its members vote for Walter Zinn which include Zinn’s support for providing additional resources to assist educationally disadvantaged students in schools located in high-poverty areas, his promise to vote to require mandatory full federal funding for I.D.E.A. – Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, his rejection of private school vouchers, and his support increasing the purchasing power of Pell Grants so that it keeps pace with increases in tuition costs.
