Commissioner Mike Tagert Announces Candidacy For United States Congress

Mike Tagert, Transportation Commissioner for the Northern District of Mississippi, today announced his candidacy for the United States Congress to represent Mississippi’s First Congressional District. Tagert will be a candidate in the May 12 special election to fill the seat of the late Representative Alan Nunnelee.

As Northern District Transportation Commissioner, Tagert currently represents every county in the First Congressional District and has a plan to bring his experience to Washington and help get the country back on track. A husband and father of four, Tagert is a six-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Reserve.

Tagert issued the following statement announcing his candidacy:

“I am proud to announce today that I will be seeking to represent Mississippi’s First District in the United States Congress. We lost a dedicated public servant with the passing of Representative Alan Nunnelee. The people of North Mississippi deserve representation that honors his standard of excellence, and I pledge to work tirelessly on behalf of the good people of the First District.

“Proven leadership is more critical than ever during these challenging times. Our nation faces threats from many directions. At home, we face a fragile economy that is keeping wages stagnant and preventing investment and job creation. Abroad, rogue states and Islamic extremists continue to wage war on our sacred freedoms and basic human decency.

“Americans are desperate for leadership. North Mississippians want high quality jobs – not more federal regulations and new taxes that tie up too much of their hard-earned take-home pay in bureaucratic red tape. President Obama doesn’t respect our Constitution or our laws and continues to bypass them for the sake of political ideology and expediency. Equally troubling, he continues to lead from behind in the face of international crises and shun Israel, one of our closest allies.

“I stood ready to defend our freedom through six years in the United States Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Reserve. I have fought to strengthen our economy and improve people’s lives by making our state’s transportation system safer and more efficient. To do that, I’ve worked with officials at local, state and federal levels, and even worked out an international agreement with the Panama Canal Authority. No matter the project, the goal was always the same: keep North Mississippi moving toward greater opportunity and more jobs.

“While I’m proud of my record in Mississippi, my most important accomplishment is being a father to our four wonderful children. Just like all parents and concerned citizens in Mississippi, Mary Love and I want our children to inherit the same opportunities and the same hope we were fortunate enough to have.

That’s why I’m running for Congress. It’s time for Washington to start working again and adopt conservative solutions that make our country stronger – both at home and abroad.”
