According to a weekly newspaper in Philadelphia,
Miss., Heard was tapped last year to
get the “campaign ship in line” after Cochran
trailed going into a Republican primary runoff.
Following Cochran’s re-election victory,
Heard rejoined the senator’s Washington
staff.
“I sat down with my wife and we talked
about it and thought it was a unique opportunity
to come back to work with somebody
I respect, totally, to help him go forward with
the big job he has in front of him,” he says.
Cochran has just started his second stint as
chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
While he has never really left the Hill, Heard
acknowledges there will be some differences
between the private and public worlds along
with differences in how business is conducted
in general. “Plus, I have gray hair now,” he
says. “I am not wet behind the ears, running
around in circles. I’ve been here, done that.”
