Speaker Gunn Statement on Passage of Education Bill Opting Out of PARCC
Today, the Mississippi House of Representatives passed House Bill 385 (HB 385), effectively opting out Mississippi from using Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) testing. The bill passed by a bipartisan vote of 116-3.
“With the passage of HB 385 today and the two bills we passed last week, we have now opted out of PARCC, returned control of curriculum to local school districts and removed any federal control over curriculum and assessments,” said Speaker of the House Philip Gunn. “Again, the passage of these bills ensures that Mississippi’s education decisions will be made by Mississippians.”
Education bills aimed at maintaining control with local school boards:
• House Bill 385: legislatively separates Mississippi from PARCC and implements a new testing regimen.
• House Bill 395: codifies the current practice of Mississippi’s educational system and guarantees that local districts have the final say in what curriculum they use day-to-day. HB395 passed by a vote of 92-25.
• House Bill 156: prevents federal government control of testing, essentially uncoupling Mississippi from any federal government overreach in our state’s education. HB156 passed by a vote of 95-21.
